At a glance

Sacajawea is a 38.1 m (125 ft) classic motor yacht built by Lake Washington Shipyards in 1936 and refitted in 1970. She accommodates 12 guests in 10 cabins. She has been sold through Classic Charters.

The exploration ship Sacajawea was originally built by the Army Corp of Engineers in 1936. Launched in Seattle Washington, she was christened, “Robert Gray” and built for surveying the Alaskan ocean floor which in 1936 was not yet a state and so it was important for US interests to demonstrate activity in the region. She went on to fight in WWII and later conducted important resource surveys both in Alaska and SF Bay.

In 2018, her current owners purchased her and began to transform the Sacajawea back into the beauty she is today, much resembling her 1936 look. Her owners renamed her Sacajawea to honor a strong and adventurous female from a time period before the boat’s construction and with a tie to the Northwest. Sacajawea was a guide for the Lewis and Clark expedition and represents strength and courage.

Today her owners are proud to offer the ship for adventurous experiences that will celebrate her history and bring joy and a lifetime of memories for her discerning guests. Sacajawea’s owners are passionate about preserving this significant historic vessel and sharing her with her guests. The yacht received a lot of fanfare on her first return to Alaska and her owners are pleased to offer her for sale as a wonderful private yacht or as a unique investment as a budding exploration charter business.

RECENT CHARTER REVIEW

I had a wonderful time cruising the inside passage of Alaska aboard the Sacajawea. The highlights were seeing the many bears, and whales well as the amazing glaciers and scenery. The Sacajawea herself is very impressive! She is much bigger than you imagine she will be and although not pretentious (this vessel was built to do hard work in Alaska, after all!), she is extremely beautiful with classic lines and original wood and metal work. It makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time to be aboard. My cabin was comfortable and much more spacious than other charters I’ve been on. The salon is very roomy and comfortable and a great place to hang out on the couches or to watch a movie. The mess hall with it’s custom furniture is beautiful although a little “extra cozy” when all 12 of us were sitting down! The food was excellent and the chef was very attentive to our individual preferences and needs. The rest of the crew was extremely helpful and are genuinely interesting people who obviously love the boat and to share about her history. Our guide really helped to add depth to the experience as he always had interesting knowledge to share about what we was going on. I can’t wait to have another trip aboard the Sacajawea with my family – Mexico maybe?! – Sacajawea Charter Guest
